What was meant to be a vibrant celebration of Filipino heritage turned tragic when a driver plowed an SUV into a crowd gathered for the Lapu Lapu Day Festival in Vancouver’s Sunset on Fraser neighborhood. According to Vancouver Police, nine people were killed and many others injured in what they are calling a “mass casualty incident.”

Details of the Incident: Chaos at Sunset on Fraser

Around 8:00 PM local time at East 41st Avenue and Fraser Street, the horrific event unfolded, where the street was lined with food trucks and families enjoying performances and festivities.

With bodies scattered across the street and first responders racing to provide aid, witnesses described the scene as chaotic and “like a war zone.”  

Eyewitnesses report that a black SUV without slowing down, sped through the festival striking numerous people before finally coming to a stop.

Videos circulating on social media captured the aftermath, showing debris, a heavily damaged SUV at the scene and wounded individuals receiving treatment.

Suspect in Custody: A 30-Year-Old Vancouver Resident

The suspect, according to Vancouver Police, is a 30-year-old man living in Vancouver. At the scene, the suspect was apprehended reportedly by some of the festival attendees before authorities arrived.

Acting Police Chief Steve Rai stated that the suspect was “known to police in certain circumstances,” although no details about his past encounters with law enforcement or a possible motive have been released.

Police have emphasized that they are confident this was not an act of terrorism. As a potential factor investigators are considering mental health issues.

Emergency Response and Investigation Ongoing

The Vancouver Police Major Crime Section is leading the investigation. At Douglas Park Community Centre a 24-hour help center has been established to assist family members and friends who have not been able to contact loved ones who were at the festival.

Authorities are urging people to come forward with information or footage related to the incident. Vancouver Police said in a public statement, “Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragic incident.”

Leaders React: An Outpouring of Grief and Support

The tragedy has shocked all of Canada not just Vancouver. On X (formerly Twitter), Prime Minister Mark Carney expressed his condolences saying, “We are all mourning with you,” and thanked first responders for their swift action.

Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim offered support to the city’s Filipino community during this difficult time and called the incident “horrific.” Jagmeet Singh, Opposition leader, shortly before the attack, had attended the festival said he was “horrified” and extended sympathies to the victims and their families. Other officials, including David Eby and Patrick Weiler, also voiced their grief and support for the community.

The Significance of Lapu Lapu Day

Lapu Lapu Day commemorates, a 16th-century Filipino hero, Datu Lapu-Lapu, who led his men in the Battle of Mactan in 1521, to defeat Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan.

Celebrated in the Philippines, on every April 27, to honor resistance against colonialism and is a point of pride for Filipino communities worldwide.

Officially established in 2023, the festival in Vancouver, symbolizes not only Filipino heritage but also the multicultural spirit of British Columbia.

This year’s event featured music performances, traditional dance, food stalls, and appearances by notable Filipino artists, making the tragic turn of events even more devastating.

Witness Accounts: “It Was Like a War Zone”

Jen Idaba-Castaneto, Festival security guard, described the scene as something she “never imagined witnessing.” She stated that she has suffered panic attacks since the incident.

Echoing the horror, Kris Pangilinan likening the crash to a bowling ball knocking over pins in a game, with bodies flying through the air.

Throughout the night, emergency crews worked to clear the scene and assist victims, while the community continues to grapple with the sheer shock and grief.

Moving Forward: Healing from the Tragedy

Officials have pledged to support the Filipino community and all those affected, as Vancouver wakes up to the aftermath of this senseless tragedy.

Victim support workers and counseling services are available, and to honor those lost, a vigil is reportedly being planned.  

While the investigation continues, the city of Vancouver stands united in mourning and in resolve to support the victims’ families. Acting Chief Rai called this incident as one of the most heartbreaking events in the city’s recent memory.
