In a devastating and an intense Russia- Ukraine war, NATO Scrambles Jets as Russia Launches Record Drone and Missile Attack on Ukraine. Considered as one of the most aggressive aerial offensives since the onset of the war in 2022, Russia launched over 728 drones and 13 missiles on Ukraine, triggering the scrambling of NATO fighter jets and setting off alarms across Eastern Europe.
Poland, a NATO member bordering western Ukraine, scrambled F-16 fighter jets and placed its armed forces on maximum alert. The offensive which included Kinzhal and Iskander missiles hit western Ukrainian cities like Lviv, Lutsk, and Rivne, dangerously close to NATO airspace.

NATO Scrambles Jets as Russia Launches Record Drone and Missile Attack on Ukraine
A Record-Breaking Russian Assault
The Russian Defense Ministry claimed it successfully struck key Ukrainian airbases and industrial targets.
Ukrainian officials countered that much of the aerial barrage involved modified Iranian-designed Shahed drones, which now carry heavier payloads and fly longer distances.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attacks, calling them “a massive new wave of terror.”
“This is a telling attack and it comes precisely at a time when so many efforts have been made to achieve peace. Only Russia continues to rebuff them all,” Zelenskyy said.
Poland Responds: NATO on High Alert
Poland’s Operational Command confirmed its jets were scrambled as a precautionary move. While no missiles or drones crossed into Polish airspace, the risk of spillover was significant enough to activate NATO air defense systems.
“Our aircraft, along with those of our allies, remain airborne to ensure the safety and integrity of NATO airspace,” Polish officials posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Fear and Devastation in Kyiv
In Kyiv, the capital city endured the brunt of the attack. Hundreds of drones flew in from all directions, overwhelming the city’s air defense systems.
Residents described the night as terrifying. “The house shook like it was made of paper,” said Katya, a resident who spent the night sheltering in her bathroom.
“My windows were shattered. Everything was broken,” said 68-year-old Tetyana.
Ukraine Fires Back Civilian Casualties in Russia
Ukraine launched counterstrikes into Russia’s Kursk region, where three civilians, including a five-year-old child, were killed, according to Russian local authorities.
The drone war, increasingly fought on both sides of the border, is not just a military tactic but a psychological one, designed to demoralize civilians.
Shahed Drones: Deadlier Than Ever
Russia’s Shahed drones have undergone substantial upgrades. The new models fly at higher altitudes, can travel up to 2,500 km, and carry 90 kg of explosives.
Some serve as decoys to draw out Ukrainian defenses, while the real damage is delivered by cruise and ballistic missiles.
“Quantity has become quality,” noted Serhii Kuzan from the Ukrainian Security and Cooperation Centre.
Air Defenses Running Low
Ukraine claimed to have intercepted 382 out of 415 aerial threats during the attack. But this success comes at a cost a dwindling supply of interceptors.
“If Ukraine doesn’t find a solution for these drones, we will face great problems during 2025,” said Ivan Stupak, a former Ukrainian intelligence officer.
Zelensky has appealed to Western allies for more Patriot missile systems and other defense platforms.
Civilian Suffering Mounts
June 2025 marked the deadliest month for civilians in Ukraine since the war began. The UN reported 232 deaths and over 1,300 injuries.
In Kyiv, apartment blocks, cars, and even a health care clinic were damaged. Rescue teams responded to fires in five districts.
One survivor, Nadiya Voitsehivkya, lost a relative crushed by debris. “Everything there is burned down. There is nothing left,” she said tearfully.
Second Major Strike in Two Days
Just 24 hours prior, Russia had launched what was then the largest drone strike of the war. That record was quickly broken. The previous attack targeted cities like Lutsk, near Poland, which is a key entry point for Western military aid.
Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed rescue efforts in Shevchenkivskyi district, where falling debris caused a top-floor apartment fire. In Darnytskyi, drone remains ignited fires at a gas station and garage.
Trump’s Frustration With Putin Grows
U.S. President Donald Trump voiced growing frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin during a Cabinet meeting:
“We get a lot of bullsh*t thrown at us by Putin. He’s very nice all the time, but it turns out to be meaningless.”
Trump reversed a recent pause in weapons shipments, resuming deliveries of 155mm artillery shells and precision-guided rockets.
NATO and Diplomacy: High Stakes in Malaysia
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Malaysia during an ASEAN summit.
“It was a frank conversation,” Rubio said, adding that he conveyed Trump’s disappointment. Lavrov reportedly shared a new proposal, but U.S. officials said no breakthrough was imminent.
Coalition of the Willing: A Renewed Push
Zelensky is set to join a video call with leaders from 30+ nations in the “coalition of the willing” to discuss new support, including peacekeeping options.
The coalition, led by France and the UK, aims to stabilize Ukraine if a ceasefire is reached. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said the focus is on “stepping up support and increasing pressure on Russia.”
Drone Warfare: A New Normal
With Russian production surging, experts warn that nightly swarms of 1,000 drones may soon become routine. “This is a war of attrition and it’s turning into a war of exhaustion,” said a Kyiv-based analyst.
Ukraine’s defenses are holding, but barely. Metro stations have become bomb shelters again, with thousands spending nights underground.
Conclusion: Ukraine’s Future Hangs in the Balance
With no ceasefire in sight and both military and civilian targets under siege, Ukraine’s future is precarious. Russia’s strategy of overwhelming drone and missile attacks is stretching air defense systems and international patience.
As NATO remains on edge, and Trump’s administration tries to reboot peace efforts, Ukraine’s ability to hold firm depends heavily on Western support. This is a pivotal moment not just for Ukraine, but for European security as a whole.
