GAZA CITY – June 11, 2025: Israeli gunfire at Gaza Aid Sites Turn Deadly: Over 70 Killed, UN Warns of Famine and Breakdown of Relief. Aid distribution turns tragic in Gaza whereat least 17 Palestinians were killed and dozens wounded on Tuesday as desperate crowds gathered near a Gaza aid site operated by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), a U.S.-backed organization.
The site, meant to provide food to thousands suffering in the besieged enclave, has now become the scene of what humanitarian groups are calling a “death trap.” According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, medics rushed the wounded to Al-Awda Hospital in Nuseirat camp and Al-Quds Hospital in Gaza City.
Many of the victims were civilians seeking food for their families amid an intensifying famine and crumbling health infrastructure.

Israeli Military Responds With Warning Shots
The Israeli military confirmed its forces fired what it called “warning shots” toward individuals it described as “suspects” posing a threat near the Wadi Gaza area.
It claimed the shots were fired hundreds of meters from the distribution center, prior to its opening. However, Gaza’s Government Media Office and eyewitnesses dispute this account, stating that live rounds were fired directly into crowds waiting for food.
“Dozens were gunned down before aid even arrived,” said one local volunteer. So far, more than 150 Palestinians have been killed and nearly 1,500 injured near GHF sites since aid distribution began on May 27.
GHF Aid Sites Branded ‘Human Slaughterhouses’
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation has become the center of controversy. While the GHF insists that its aid distributions have been incident-free, videos and witness reports tell a different story.
Humanitarian observers and local media have described the aid zones as “human slaughterhouses.” The UN’s Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner-General of UNRWA, slammed the model of aid delivery, stating:
“Day after day, casualties & scores of injured are reported at distribution points manned by Israel & private security companies… This humiliating system continues to force thousands to walk for miles, excluding the most vulnerable.”
Lazzarini urged for food distribution to return to UN-led oversight, citing the agency’s decades of expertise and trust in the region.
Desperate Crowds, Insufficient Aid
The scene at the aid sites is chaotic and heartbreaking. Mohammad Abu Amr, a 40-year-old father, said he arrived at 2 a.m. hoping to get food. “People walked for over 20 kilometers and returned empty-handed. Some aid ran out in five minutes.
It’s insane,” he told reporters. Despite the promises of better logistics and security, the GHF sites have only worsened conditions. The aid trickle has been nowhere near enough to meet the needs of over 2.3 million people trapped in Gaza under siege.
Greta Thunberg Detained and Deported
The crisis also gained international attention after Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg was detained by Israeli authorities while aboard the Madleen, a ship attempting to deliver aid to Gaza as part of the Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC).
She and several others were arrested after Israeli forces intercepted the vessel in international waters, drawing sharp rebukes from human rights groups. Thunberg has since departed for France after refusing to sign a voluntary deportation form.
Rima Hassan, a French MEP who was also aboard, remains detained along with other international activists. Amnesty International condemned the operation, calling it a violation of international law.
Over 70 Killed in a Single Day Across Gaza
In total, over 70 Palestinians were killed on Tuesday, not only near aid zones but also in airstrikes and military assaults across Gaza. In al-Mawasi, a so-called “safe zone,” an Israeli strike killed three people in displacement tents.
In Khan Younis, another drone strike took three more lives, while in northern Gaza, four paramedics were killed while performing humanitarian duties.
The Health Ministry warned that hospitals are overwhelmed, especially after Al-Amal Hospital ceased operations due to nearby hostilities. With Nasser Hospital now the only facility with ICU capacity in southern Gaza, the medical system is near collapse.
UN Issues Stark Famine Warning
The United Nations is sounding the alarm louder than ever. More than 2,700 children under five have been diagnosed with acute malnutrition, and a UN-backed report has warned that one in five Gazans is now at risk of starvation.
The current aid levels, described by the UN as a “drop in the ocean,” have failed to stem the crisis. Many international agencies, including UNRWA, remain barred from operating fully in the enclave due to the Israeli aid blockade imposed on March 2.
Israeli Offensive Continues in the West Bank
Violence also surged in the occupied West Bank, where Israeli troops conducted a deadly raid in Nablus, killing two brothers, Nidal and Khaled Mahdi Ahmad Umairah, with live ammunition.
The Wafa News Agency reported that medics were blocked from reaching the victims during the hours-long incursion. At least 85 people were injured, and dozens detained.
Residents described the Old City as being “under lockdown,” with access to food, medicine, and emergency services severely restricted.
International Outcry Grows
The Freedom Flotilla Coalition, UN bodies, and human rights groups are calling for an immediate ceasefire and the restoration of neutral, UN-led aid delivery. The GHF, backed by the U.S. and Israel, is now facing scrutiny for its role in what critics call “lethal ambushes disguised as relief.”
With death tolls climbing and aid running dry, Gaza remains on the brink. The international community is being urged to act decisively before the humanitarian disaster becomes irreversible.
Conclusion:
The Gaza aid crisis has reached a critical tipping point. The failure of the GHF-led model, compounded by Israeli military actions, has created conditions where desperation, famine, and fear rule daily life.
With more than 54,000 Palestinians dead since the conflict began and UN agencies sidelined, pressure is mounting globally to restore legitimate, neutral humanitarian operations and to end what many now describe as the systematic collapse of Gaza’s humanitarian infrastructure.
