The Gaza war reached a deadly new chapter this week as Deir al-Balah Under Siege: Israeli Offensive Kills 65, Fuels Global Outcry Over Gaza Humanitarian Crisis. For the first time Israeli tanks entered Deir al-Balah since hostilities began in October 2023. The surprise ground offensive has already killed at least 65 Palestinians, displaced tens of thousands, and triggered global condemnation.
Once considered one of Gaza’s few remaining “safe zones,” Deir al-Balah has now become the epicenter of a deepening humanitarian crisis. With the civilian death toll surpassing 59,000, UN agencies and aid groups are sounding the alarm: Gaza is on the brink of mass starvation and infrastructure collapse. Meanwhile, Israeli officials claim the incursion is aimed at targeting Hamas and locating remaining hostages but families of those hostages are raising serious concerns over their safety.

Deir al-Balah Under Siege: Israeli Offensive Kills 65, Fuels Global Outcry Over Gaza Humanitarian Crisis
Deir al-Balah Offensive: Tanks Roll into Central Gaza
On July 21, 2025, the Israeli military launched a major ground assault in Deir al-Balah, a city that had, until now, avoided direct tank invasions.
The Golani Brigade spearheaded the incursion, following intense overnight airstrikes and artillery bombardments that left large swaths of the city in ruins.
Eyewitness reports describe scenes of chaos, with Israeli tanks, jets, and naval gunboats simultaneously targeting residential areas, mosques, and hospitals.
According to medics on the ground, at least three Palestinians were killed in the first tank advance, with dozens more injured and many still buried under the rubble.
Mass Displacement Amid Escalation
Just 24 hours before the invasion, the Israeli army dropped thousands of evacuation leaflets over Deir al-Balah, ordering tens of thousands of residents to flee.
With fuel almost entirely unavailable, many families used donkey carts or fled on foot in search of safety.
Aid organizations estimate that between 50,000 and 80,000 people have been displaced from Deir al-Balah in the last 48 hours.
According to Doctors Without Borders (MSF), the displaced population includes families who had already fled other parts of Gaza multiple times.
“This tent I have put up and down 13 times,” said one resident, Attef Abu Mousa, speaking to CNN. “Tonight was very difficult.”
Strikes on UN and WHO Facilities Spark Global Fury
The World Health Organization (WHO) and United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) both confirmed that their facilities in Deir al-Balah were struck by Israeli forces.
WHO’s main medical warehouse was destroyed by shelling, causing a fire that rendered the facility nonfunctional.
WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus expressed deep concern:
“This attack further cripples our ability to deliver life-saving aid to the people of Gaza. A ceasefire is not just necessary it is overdue.”
WHO also reported that Israeli forces raided their staff residence, detaining two male employees and forcing women and children to evacuate on foot through active war zones. One WHO staff member remains in custody.
Gaza Humanitarian Crisis Worsens by the Hour
The Gaza Strip is now witnessing a full-scale humanitarian breakdown. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), more than 87% of Gaza is either under evacuation orders or militarized zones.
Health authorities reported that at least 19 Palestinians died from starvation on Sunday alone.
The World Food Programme (WFP) warned of imminent mass deaths, with 900,000 children suffering from malnutrition and hospitals lacking fuel, medicine, and supplies.
“People are risking their lives just to find a scrap of bread,” said Antoine Renard, WFP’s representative in Palestine.
International Condemnation Mounts Against Israel
A joint statement from 25 countries including the UK, France, Australia, and Canada criticized Israel’s military campaign and aid restrictions in Gaza.
The coalition called the “drip-feeding” of aid unacceptable and demanded an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.
“The Israeli government’s denial of essential humanitarian assistance is inhumane and dangerous,” the statement read. “Israel must comply with its obligations under international humanitarian law.”
UN Secretary-General António Guterres added his voice, warning that Gaza was “collapsing before the eyes of the world.”
Hostage Families Alarmed by New Offensive
Israel maintains that the Deir al-Balah offensive is driven in part by intelligence suggesting that hostages may be held in the area.
Of the 251 people taken hostage by Hamas in October 2023, 49 remain in Gaza, including at least 27 confirmed dead.
But the Hostage Families Forum issued a strongly worded statement criticizing the military campaign, saying:
“The people of Israel will not forgive anyone who knowingly endangered the hostages. No one will be able to say they didn’t know what was at stake.”
They demand that the government explain how the ground invasion protects rather than jeopardizes the remaining captives.
Ceasefire Talks at Risk as Violence Intensifies
Mediated by Qatar, Egypt, and the U.S., ongoing ceasefire negotiations have been dealt a serious blow.
A senior Hamas official told Reuters that the Deir al-Balah offensive and the escalating death toll have endangered the proposed 60-day truce and hostage exchange.
Diplomats warn that the situation could spiral into a protracted military entrenchment, worsening the humanitarian toll and further fracturing Gaza’s already devastated communities.
Food and Aid Supplies Blocked Outside Gaza’s Gates
UNRWA says it has enough food to feed Gaza’s population for three months, but supplies are stuck at border crossings due to Israeli restrictions.
On Monday, at least 67 Palestinians were killed near aid trucks waiting to enter Gaza. Israeli officials claimed that warning shots were fired in response to an “immediate threat” and questioned the reported casualty figures.
UN agencies, however, insist that these attacks constitute a violation of international humanitarian law, given that civilians were simply trying to access food and water.
Deir al-Balah: A Symbol of Gaza’s Collapse
Until this week, Deir al-Balah served as a refuge for displaced civilians and a hub for humanitarian operations. Now, the city lies in ruins and its fall symbolizes the collapse of any remaining safe zones in Gaza.
“There is no safe place anywhere in Gaza,” said Hamdi Abu Mughseeb, a resident fleeing the latest assault. “I don’t know where we can go.”
Conclusion: A Crisis Beyond Warfare A Collapse of Humanity
As Israeli tanks push deeper into Deir al-Balah, and humanitarian infrastructure buckles under siege, the war in Gaza has moved far beyond a military conflict. It is now a test of global conscience, a collapse of the most basic human systems food, water, safety, and medical care.
International voices calling for a ceasefire in Gaza are growing louder, but so is the devastation on the ground. The question that remains: At what cost will the world continue to watch?
