After clinching victory in the Democratic primary, Zohran Mamdani Faces GOP Deportation Calls Over Anti-ICE Agenda. The race for New York City’s mayoral seat has been upended by a storm of controversy after Democratic Socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani won a surprise victory in the Democratic primary, defeating former Governor Andrew Cuomo. But rather than focusing on policy debates, the spotlight has shifted to Republican calls for Mamdani’s deportation and denaturalization fueled by his outspoken anti-ICE pledge and progressive platform.

Zohran Mamdani Faces GOP Deportation Calls Over Anti-ICE Agenda
Mamdani’s Anti-ICE Platform Sparks Conservative Backlash
Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old state assemblyman representing Astoria, Queens, has run a campaign that openly challenges federal immigration enforcement. He calls ICE a “fascist institution” and has pledged to:
- Expel ICE from all city-owned properties
- Cut off all cooperation between NYC agencies and federal immigration officers
- Expand legal aid for immigrants
- Protect undocumented residents’ data from federal access
“Zohran Mamdani will fight Trump’s attempts to gouge the working class and deliver a city where everyone can afford a dignified life,” reads a statement on his campaign website.
While these proposals energized many progressive voters, they provoked sharp condemnation from Republicans across the country.
Tom Homan: “Federal Law Trumps Him Every Day”
Tom Homan, the former ICE director and current immigration advisor to Donald Trump, appeared on Fox News to deliver a scathing rebuke.
“Good luck with that. Federal law trumps him every day, every hour, of every minute,” Homan said.
He further promised that ICE would triple enforcement operations in sanctuary cities like New York, asserting that Mamdani’s platform was “legally meaningless.”
“We’re going to double down and triple down… send more agents, and increase worksite enforcement tenfold.”
GOP Congressman Andy Ogles Demands Deportation, Denaturalization
The outrage intensified when Rep. Andy Ogles (R-TN) publicly referred to Mamdani as “Little Muhammad” and called for his deportation via denaturalization proceedings.
On X (formerly Twitter), Ogles posted: “He needs to be DEPORTED… an antisemitic, socialist, communist who will destroy the great City of New York.”
Ogles followed up with a formal letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi, urging the DOJ to investigate whether Mamdani fraudulently obtained his U.S. citizenship.
Mamdani, who became a naturalized citizen in 2018, was also targeted over lyrics from a 2017 rap referencing the “Holy Land Five”, individuals convicted for funding Hamas.
CNN Clip of Mamdani’s 2019 Rap Goes Viral
In an unexpected twist, Mamdani’s old creative work surfaced during a live CNN interview on Erin Burnett OutFront. The host aired a portion of his 2019 rap video “Nani”, performed under the alias Mr. Cardamom.
The video features Mamdani in an apron dancing with friends and actress Madhur Jaffrey. Caught off guard, Mamdani laughed: “I didn’t think it was going to be on CNN.”
The video went viral, with reactions split between praise for his creativity and criticism over perceived unseriousness.
From Assemblyman to Mayoral Frontrunner: Who Is Zohran Mamdani?
Since 2021, Zohran Mamdani has served in the New York State Assembly. His political style is unapologetically left-wing, emphasizing housing, transit, childcare, and immigrant rights.
Key proposals from his platform include:
- Free buses for all New Yorkers
- Rent freeze on rent-stabilized apartments
- City-run grocery stores to combat food deserts
- Construction of 200,000 social housing units in 3 years
- Universal childcare from six weeks to five years
His plan would be financed by a $10 billion tax hike on corporations and high-income earners.
“He’s a Communist!”: Right-Wing Labels vs. Reality
Shortly after Mamdani’s primary win, Donald Trump erupted on Truth Social: “A 100% Communist Lunatic… He looks TERRIBLE, his voice is grating, he’s not very smart… backed by AOC+3 dummies.”
Other right-wing voices followed suit:
- Nick Sortor claimed Mamdani was “not even a socialist. He’s a full-on COMMUNIST.”
- Ben Shapiro told his audience that a “communist is likely to be the next mayor of New York.”
- Rep. Elise Stefanik labeled Mamdani a “communist” on social media.
But are these accusations accurate?
Experts: Mamdani Is Not a Communist
According to political science scholars and historians the answer is no.
“Mamdani is NOT a communist,” said Anna Grzymala-Busse, a Stanford University professor. “Communism involves a centrally planned economy, no markets, and single-party rule. He is not advocating for any of that.”
“It’s an absurd slander,” said Geoffrey Kurtz, a political theory expert at Borough of Manhattan Community College.
Even his most radical proposal city-run grocery stores is not a call to eliminate private supermarkets, but rather to supplement food access in underserved neighborhoods.
Democratic Socialism ≠ Communism
Democratic socialism, which Mamdani openly identifies with, seeks to provide publicly owned or heavily regulated services (like transit, healthcare, or housing) within a democratic framework. It does not call for:
- The abolition of private property
- The end of private business
- One-party rule or authoritarianism
“These ideas are common in France, Canada, and Sweden,” said Oxana Shevel, political science professor at Tufts University. “They’re not communism.”
Legal Experts: No Grounds for Deportation or Denaturalization
Despite GOP threats, legal experts say there is no viable legal pathway to denaturalize or deport Mamdani for policy positions or past lyrics.
“There’s no credible legal path for deporting Mamdani over policy positions,” said a constitutional law analyst. “This is political theater.”
They also noted that the Communist Control Act of 1954, which some Trump supporters have referenced, is unenforceable and would be struck down today under the First Amendment.
India’s Right-Wing Media Reacts to Mamdani
Mamdani’s Indian heritage and Muslim faith have also drawn attention in Indian and diaspora media. Some commentators compared him to London Mayor Sadiq Khan, framing his win as a “conquest by the wrong faith.”
Critics accused him of attempting to replicate “failed socialist ideas from India” in New York such as state-run grocery shops and rent controls. Others viewed his criticism of Narendra Modi and Benjamin Netanyahu as politically disqualifying.
Still, younger Indian-Americans have rallied around Mamdani as a symbol of generational change, inclusion, and multicultural leadership.
Cuomo Stays in Race, Setting Up Three-Way Showdown
Though Mamdani defeated Cuomo in the Democratic primary, Cuomo has announced plans to remain on the general election ballot under his new “Fight & Deliver” line.
This sets the stage for a three-way race between:
- Zohran Mamdani (Democratic Socialist)
- Andrew Cuomo (Centrist Independent)
- Curtis Sliwa (Republican Guardian Angels founder)
- With incumbent Eric Adams also running as an independent
When asked if he was ready to face Cuomo again, Mamdani said: “We did it once, and it turned out pretty well.”
Final Thoughts: Facts Over Fear
While it’s fair to challenge Mamdani’s policies, equating them with communism distorts both reality and the debate.
“Democratic socialism emerged precisely as an alternative to communism,” said Harvey Klehr, a leading scholar on American communism. “It supports democracy, not authoritarianism.”
Zohran Mamdani may be one of the most polarizing figures in New York politics today but one thing is clear: the political attacks against him are as ideological as they are personal.
And for many voters in New York, Trump’s insult may be Mamdani’s best campaign ad yet.
