A Night of Celebration Turns to Chaos

The house party, attended by nearly 100 guests, including local high school students and young adults, was meant to be a lively gathering. Instead, it ended with dozens of gunshots and panicked guests fleeing the scene.

According to law enforcement officials, the shooting occurred just over an hour after deputies had responded to a noise complaint at the same residence. Catawba County Sheriff’s Maj. Aaron Turk said deputies asked the residents to turn the music down around 11 p.m. Saturday and left after compliance.

However, tragedy struck shortly after midnight, when at least 80 shots were fired in what officials now describe as a coordinated attack involving multiple shooters and multiple firearms, possibly including long guns.

Victims Identified and Condition Updates

The deceased victim was identified as 58-year-old Shawn Patrick Hood of Lenoir, North Carolina. He was found dead at the scene. Authorities reported that the victims range in age from 16 to 58 years old, reflecting the diverse age group that attended the gathering.

One person remains in critical condition at a hospital in Charlotte, while others are being treated at local hospitals. Some have already been released, but seven people were still hospitalized as of late Sunday, authorities confirmed.

A Complex Crime Scene

Officials say the crime scene spans nearly two acres, including both indoor and outdoor spaces across several properties along Walnut Acres Drive. According to Maj. Turk, the fact that many attendees were not local and left the area quickly has made it difficult to piece together the full story.

“We’re trying to track down everyone who was here,” Turk said. “It’s difficult when you have a large crowd where most people don’t live in the area and quickly dispersed.”

Law Enforcement Response and Investigation

The Catawba County Sheriff’s Office, in partnership with the Hickory Police Department, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (NC SBI), and the FBI Charlotte field office, is leading a multi-agency investigation into the Hickory shooting.

At this point, no arrests have been made, and law enforcement is urging anyone who attended the party or has information about the incident to come forward. Investigators have already interviewed over 70 people, and believe there were multiple shooters involved.

“We believe this was not a random act,” Turk said. “We are looking into possible motives, including tensions between attendees at the party.”

Witness Accounts: “Like a Movie”

An eyewitness who spoke to WBTV described the scene as something straight out of a movie. “I was outside in the yard and I heard a lot of shots going off and people running to the front,” the anonymous witness said. “It was terrifying. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

People reportedly ducked for cover, scrambled to their cars, and fled into the night as shots rang out. The confusion and chaos that followed have made evidence collection and witness identification particularly challenging for investigators.

Gun Violence Concerns in North Carolina

The North Carolina mass shooting adds to the growing list of mass shootings in the United States in 2025, with over 130 incidents already recorded this year, according to data from the Gun Violence Archive.

Sheriff Don Brown addressed the emotional toll this type of violence takes not only on the victims and their families but also on law enforcement and the local community.

“I talked to some neighbors here; they were visibly upset,” Brown said. “Our deputies have been working tirelessly. These types of incidents are difficult for everyone involved.”

Brown also noted a troubling rise in violent incidents involving young people, stating that more teens and young adults are becoming both victims and perpetrators of gun violence.

Community Reaction and Appeal for Information

Residents in the Mountain View area expressed their shock and concern over the incident, noting that this type of violence is rare in their neighborhood. The sheriff’s office has reiterated that while the public is not believed to be in immediate danger, the shooters are still at large.

Authorities are urging anyone with photos, videos, or firsthand knowledge of the party to contact the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office. “Even the smallest detail could be vital,” officials emphasized.

Conclusion: Seeking Justice for the Victims

The Hickory mass shooting has left a community shaken and investigators with a complex case to solve. As the search for suspects continues, law enforcement remains committed to bringing those responsible to justice.

“We are certainly hopeful to find those that are responsible and bring them here, to justice,” Maj. Turk said. “This was a senseless act of violence. Someone knows what happened, and we need their help.”
