Putin Declares ‘Easter Truce’ in Ukraine Amid Renewed Fighting and International Pressure

On Saturday, April 19, 2025, Putin Declares ‘Easter Truce’ in Ukraine Amid Renewed Fighting and International Pressure. In a surprising development, Russian President Vladimir Putin, offered a rare temporary ceasefire in the ongoing war that began with Russia’s invasion in February 2022. The ceasefire, Kremlin stated that, would last from 6 p.m. Moscow time (3 p.m. GMT) on Saturday until midnight Sunday (9 p.m. GMT), aligning with Orthodox Easter celebrations.

Russia Announces Surprise Ceasefire Over Easter Weekend

During a meeting with Russian Chief of General Staff Valery Gerasimov, Putin declared “Guided by humanitarian considerations, the Russian side announces an Easter truce.” He added that the forces must remain vigilant for potential provocations or violations.

In the three-year war, the announcement marked the most significant pause and came on the heels of mounting international pressure, from U.S. President Donald Trump particularly, who has been pushing for a negotiated end to the conflict.

Zelenskyy Skeptical as Attacks Continue

Responding cautiously to the announcement, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, accused Moscow of using the ceasefire as a political tool rather than a sincere gesture. Zelenskyy wrote on X, “As for yet another attempt by Putin to play with human lives and at this moment, air raid alerts are spreading across Ukraine.”

Later he added that although Ukraine was willing to mirror the truce, the Russians violated the very ceasefire they had proposed. In certain areas Russian forces continue assault operations. In a Saturday night address Zelenskyy said, “According to the report of the commander-in-chief, Russian assault operations continue in some parts of the frontline and Russian artillery continues to fire.”

In Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine, Air raid sirens had sounded shortly before the truce went into effect, reinforcing Kyiv’s skepticism. Right after the ceasefire started, the alerts ended but Ukrainian officials remained cautious.

U.S. Push for Peace and Rising Diplomatic Pressure

The announcement came just one day after U.S. President Donald Trump stated that negotiations between Ukraine and Russia were “coming to a head.” Trump has been working to secure a peace deal, but warned that if no progress is made, the U.S. may soon “move on.” Signaling American frustration with the stalled diplomacy, Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed the warning.

Trump’s efforts have yet to yield major concessions from Moscow, while a U.S.-mediated proposal for a full, unconditional 30-day ceasefire has recently been accepted by Ukraine. Russia, rejected the proposal, making the Easter truce more of a tactical move than a genuine step toward peace.

Fighting Persists in Kursk Region

Fighting has continued in Russia’s border region of Kursk, despite the truce. Ukrainian troops have been pushed out of the village of Oleshnya by the Russian forces, which is one of the last footholds Kyiv held in Oleshnya. Previously seized by Ukrainian forces during a surprise incursion last year, Russian troops had retaken 99.5% of the territory as reported by Gerasimov to Putin.

Battles are still underway, according to Russian state media, in the village of Gornal, located roughly 11 kilometers south of Oleshnya. While these claims could not be verified by the Associated Press, and Ukrainian officials have yet to comment.

The significance of the Kursk region remains high, as previously Ukraine aimed to use its foothold there as a bargaining chip in negotiations.

Drone Strikes and Continued Hostilities

The Ukrainian Air Force reported that, 87 exploding drones and decoys were launched by Russia overnight into Saturday. Of these, 33 were intercepted, while another 36 were likely brought down by electronic jamming. Russia’s Ministry of Defense also claim that two Ukrainian drones have been shot down by them.

These attacks sparked fires in the Sumy region, and caused damage to farms in the Odesa region, although no casualties were reported. These ongoing military operations cast doubt on the effectiveness and sincerity of the ceasefire.

Soldiers on the Ground Express Doubt

Ukrainian soldiers, on the front lines in cities like Kramatorsk, express skepticism about the impact of truce. A 40-year-old Ukrainian soldier Dmitry said, “These 30 hours will lead to nothing. The killings of our people and theirs will 100 percent continue.”

A 22-year-old soldier, Vladislav, compared the current ceasefire to failed truces in previous years. He said, “Our neighbors are already so predictable… I feel like it’s going to start again after a while, and it’s going to go on and on.”

Prisoner Exchange Amid Ceasefire

Russia and Ukraine, in one of a rare positive development, conducted a large prisoner-of-war exchange on Saturday. About 246 captured fighters were returned from each side. President Zelenskyy said that since the war began, 4,552 Ukrainian soldiers returned.

Although meaningful for the families involved, this gesture is unlikely to significantly shift the broader dynamics of the conflict.

Looking Ahead: Ceasefire or Strategic Pause?

The Easter truce by Putin presents a rare moment of reduced hostilities, where as many observers rather than a genuine move toward peace, see it as a strategic pause. Putin’s statement that the truce would “test” Kyiv’s sincerity suggests a political calculation more than humanitarian intent.

Ukraine warns that Russian attacks are ongoing despite Easter truce and the U.S. indicating its patience is wearing thin, the hope for a longer-term resolution appears tenuous. Whether this short pause simply serves as yet another fleeting break in a brutal war or that which can pave the way for sustained dialogue, remains to be seen.
